Modal Harmony in French Music of the 17th Century: Its Criteria and Basises in the Works by Gerard Geay |

The author analyzes the researches of Geay, a French musicologist, who studies modal harmony in music of Pierre Guedron, Nicolas Forme, Henri Fremart, Eustache Du Caurroy in the aspect of their observance of contemporary rules of composition. Geay shows that their music demonstrate the unity of modality, solmization and counterpoint. In order to characterize modal chromatisms Geay coins the term of modal scale steps.
