Tibetan and Tyvan Throat Signing in the View of the Resonance Theory of Voice Production |
Vladimir P. Morozov
The work deals with the scientific basis of the art of throat signing («dual sound»), traditional for some peoples in Central Asia. Computer analysis shows that high flute sounds making up the throat-signing melody are actually overtones of the simultaneously produced lower bass sound. The singer extracts them from the lower tone using his proficient control over the resonance characteristics of his vocal apparatus involving both true and false vocal folds (cords). The survey also provides comparative analysis of throat and academic singing in the light of the resonance theory. Key words: throat singing, overtone singing, resonance theory of singing.
