Musicology Annotation << Back The Hymn "To Our Father": from the History of Translations Into the Udmurt Language Gumerova Aysylu T., Kamitova Alevtina V. The article traces the history of translations of the prayer "To Our Father" into the Udmurt language, from the 18th century to the present. On the basis of linguistic and musicological analysis of the texts of chants-translations, the features of adapted versions are determined, translation strategies are revealed in matters of semantic, lexical, structural correlation of Udmurt samples with the Church Slavonic primary source. The chronological approach makes it possible to trace the process of formation of Christian terminology in the Udmurt language and, more broadly, the written Udmurt language, starting from dialectisms, semantic inconsistencies characteristic of the first translation experiments, to the modern version that meets all the norms of the literary Udmurt language and accurately conveys the content of the religious text. The study of the musical part of the Udmurt chants-translations "To Our Father" is carried out for the first time. The results of the musicological analysis make it possible to reveal the principles of adaptation of the Orthodox liturgical chant to the Udmurt texts. It is noted that translators turned to everyday chant, the simplicity of the musical and linguistic characteristics of which made it possible to superimpose Udmurt texts on the Church Slavonic chant without losing the musical image of the chant, keeping it recognizable for the parishioners.
