Musicology Annotation << Back Perpetuum Mobile in the Plays of Sh.V. Alkan, J. Adams and D. Ligeti: Interpretation of the Genre, Forms, Compositional Techniques Petruseva Nadezhda A., Davydova Inessa A. In the aspect of the perpetuum mobile genre, the article builds a vector that for the first time brought together composers from different eras and countries: Charles Alcan, John Adams and György Ligeti. A comparative analysis of the interpretation of forms is given: a small rondo in Alcán's Rondo Toccata; three-section forms in the play "Phrygian Gate" by Adams and in the sketch "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" by Ligeti. It is argued that the irregular accent rhythm of Adams and Ligeti develops the tradition of I. Stravinsky and B. Bartok. The conclusions show that within the framework of one perpetuum mobile genre, composers use various local structures and compositional techniques: extended tonality characteristic of 19th-century Romanticism, clock metric and structural variation in Alcán’s Rondo Toccata; virtuosity combined with an examination of aspects of modality, rhythm and density in Adams’ play "The Phrygian Gate" and in a study of Ligeti’s "The Sorcerer’s Apprentice." The example of Adams’s post-minimalist play "The Phrygian Gate" demonstrates his work with multivariability (pattern length, variety of fret structures, hemioles and layer densities), increasing interest in the progression of irregularity and the principle of asymmetry. It is emphasized that the dialectics of Ligeti’s mobile and stable structures in the sketch "The Sorcerer’s Apprentice" are the tradition of K. Debussy, sonor-acoustic overlays of fragments of modal sounds, combining polymodality and chromatics - a tradition coming from O. Messian and J. Cage. An integrated approach was used (consideration of local structures and composite techniques in combination with comparativistic elements).
