Ensembles National – Western European Strings in Modern Chinese Music |
Fan Rong
The article is devoted to some features of ensemble combinations of Western European – national stringed instruments in the music of Chinese composers of the turn of the XX–XXI centuries. As a rule, such ensembles encourage the description of the "Chinese flavor", which fills the sound of instruments of Western European origin. Traditional strings are easily imitated with the help of classical Western musical instruments, and not only strings. However, the combination of instruments of diverse cultural origin in an ensemble is an innovative phenomenon, which not only reflects the mutual influences of technical and aesthetic characteristics inherent in each instrument, but also the difference in sound images generated by identical playing techniques in pairs of erhu/violin, kunhou/harp. The creativity of Chinese composers allows us to see new opportunities for merging instrumental cultures in enriched genres of ensemble music.
Keywords: ensemble music, Chinese string instruments, instrumental mixes, erhu, kunhou.
