«Choral Church Hymns in the Vot Language»: About Musical аnd Translation Techniques |
Gumerova Aysylu T.
The article addresses a period in the history of Orthodox singing of the Udmurt people. The author focuses on the prerevolutionary collection of church hymns with texts in the Udmurt (Vot language, spoken by the Votyak peoples) language, prepared as part of the missionary activities of the Russian Orthodox Church in the second half of the 19th - early 20th centuries. Comparison of two versions of the same chants - Church Slavonic and Udmurt - reveals the basic principles of adapting canonical chants to translated texts. In addition, the materials of the collection give an idea of the church singing of the Udmurts during this period.
