Image of Rome in Puccini’s «Tosca» and its screen versions: on the question of the «city in opera» theme |
Tarakanova Ekaterina M.
The article is devoted to the city imagery in opera. The city image can be ancient or modern. In its complex interweaving of space-time coordinates this is one of the essential opera chronotopes among a wide variety of others. As a rule, the image of the city is used to be a symbol and this is emphasized by the music. The opera director (or the director of the film-opera) can increase the symbolism of the city space, which was expressed in libretto and music. Depicting the city one can use opera conventionality or a realistic, "documented" reliable habitat. Or the director is looking for another individual production solution. Giacomo Puccini’s "Tosca" is considered in this regard as well as some related films by Italian directors Carmine Gallone and Gianfranko De Bosio are taken.
Keywords: city imagery in opera, opera on screen, opera chronotope, Italian opera films, Puccini’s «Tosca».
