Musicology Annotation << Back Co-creation Sh.-V. Alcan and R. Leventhal Kuprinа Elena Yu. The relevance of the topic in Russian musicology is due to the emergence of new facts from the history of music related to the introduction of foreign sources into scientific circulation. Turned away from the "official" history of musical art, the French composer and pianist of the Middle Romanticism era Charles Valentin Alcan (1813-1888) has been in the lens of increased attention of foreign researchers for more than half a century. Among them – the outstanding American pianist Raymond Leventhal, inspired by the ideas of the legendary "recluse" and who became one of the first in America a universally recognized interpreter of Alkan’s works. Considering it his moral duty to protect his music from interpretations distorting its nature, aware of the responsibility for its revival and presentation to the general public, Leventhal compiles and edits the first in the Americas collection «The Piano Music of Alkan», which was published by G. Schirmer (New York) in 1964. In the introduction to the work, Leventhal discusses the nature of interpretive art, the responsibility of the performer to the composer, and the need for deep knowledge in the field of performing traditions. Leventhal’s comments are presented in the context of a general conversation about the monologic nature of innovation and co-created polylogue, about ideas and their assessments, as well as about the vagaries of musical Fortune.
