Parody technique in masses by John Taverner |
Naumova Natalya I.
The article is devoted to underexplored field both in Russian and Western musicology – parody technique in masses by one of the most outstanding English composers of Early Tudor period John Taverner (c. 1490–1545). Two of the eight Taverner’s masses are parody masses. These are «Small Devotion» и «Mater Christi» masses for five voices, based on Taverner’s motets. Taverner’s parody masses are considered in the context of the English polyphonic tradition. The author of the article distinguishes two types of English parody masses, to the second of which belong parody masses by Taverner. Taverner’s methods of working with the original source are identified. Particular emphasis is placed on the parody technique in Gloria from mass «Small Devotion», where, through scrupulous work with the motet material, the composer builds an exquisite, elaborated composition. The difference in the parody principles of Taverner and the two most influential representatives of the Netherlandish School Jacob Obrecht and Josquin des Prez is shown. A number of decisions that Taverner embodies precisely through the use of the original source are unique for both the English and the Continental parody masses.
Keywords: parody mass, early Tudor Church Music, Robert Fayrfax, John Taverner, motet, strict counterpoint, Taverner’s mass «Small Devotion».
