Musicology Annotation << Back Darius Milhaud’s Octet: contrapuntal technique in polycomposition conditions Zhalnin Vladimir V. Polycomposition in the Darius Milhaud’s heritage became a manifestation of composer’s polystructural ideas. The first prerequisites for polycomposition can be found in Etude op.63№3 for piano and orchestra, which is a superimposition of four independent fugues. For the first time, a French composer turned to polycomposition in the Octet op.291, which can also be performed as two separate string quartets. The article deals with the polyphonic technique of each of the quartets and the formation on this basis of a more complex structural principle – polycomposition.
