Musicology Annotation << Back Salome Casus: Кaratygin’s music to the Evreinov’s performance Sviridovskaya Nina D. This article is devoted to Nicolay Evreinov’s Salome – the fabulous interpretation in Vera Komissarzhevskaya’s theatre in 1908. The scandal at general rehearsal caused censoring of the production and aroused fierce and lingering debate on the fresh approach of N. Evreinov and his supporters. The performance based on the idea of "synthesis of arts" was supposed to bring apotheosis of theatricality of Wilde's Salome not only excluding realism but enhancing its grotesque origin. The dangerous but immensely attractive main character, beauty emphasized in all details of the performance and its unabashed eroticism made Evreinov’s Salome one of the main symbols of Silver Age that reflected its artistic and aesthetic ideas. Musical arrangement of the performance by Vyacheslav Karatygin - composer, critic and educator - is examined for the first time.
