Easter Stikheres in Partes Polyphony: on the question of cycle organization |
Evgenia E. Gatovskaya
This paper deals with three compositions in the Partes style, created in the second half of the 17th century and put to the
lyrics of the Easter Stikheres. Two of the aforementioned compositions are anonymous, with the third being a work by a prominent
Baroque composer Vasily Titov. The scores of three compositions, having been reconstructed from the manuscripts kept in
the Synodal singing collection in the Department of Manuscripts and Early Printed Books of the State Historical Museum, in
the collection of academician M.N. Tikhomirov in the Department of Rare books and Manuscripts of the State Public Scientifi c
Technological Library of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Easter Stikheres by Vasily Titov and the
composition for eight voices are to be introduced into scientifi c discourse for the fi rst time.
This paper analyzes interrelation between canonical text attributed to John of Damascus and music which manifests itself in
metric and texture organization, as well as in multifarious methods used to imitate polyphony. Special emphasis is laid on musical
and thematical organization of the Stikheres, as well as on the analysis of characteristic melodic phrases, which contribute to the
unity of these cyclic compositions.
