Stretta and Cabaletta in Rossini’s Operas Seria:
the Problem of Terminology and Formation |

This article is devoted to questions of structure of musical numbers in Rossini’s operas seria. Special attention is paid to the two-part form consisting of cantabile and stretta called la solita forma. Such form alternating in slow and fast sections, contemplation and active effectiveness allowed to vary arias and duets. In the article the term “cabaletta” is revealed in detail and it is ambiguously treated in musicological literature. Majority of musical numbers are written in the two-part form in Rossini’s operas seria. However, two main parts can be split up in more deployed arias and duets. Various options of partitioning of the sections la solita forma, which then form a four-part form, are described in the article. The brightest samples of Rossini`s arias are presented as examples.
