G. F. Handel and German Oratorial Genres |
Volov D.I.
In the article two main types of German oratorial genres of the 18th century are examined – oratorio Passion and Passion oratorio. The examination and description of both are based on two works by G. F. Handel: St. John Passion and The Passion Oratorio written on the poetic libretto by B. H. Brockes (also known as Brockes Passion). The major part of the article is focused on the analysis of Handel’s Brockes Passion, where one can find features of the German Passion genre (due to the usage of Gospel passages and paraphrases) as well as features of the Italian oratorio, expressed in the way personages of Brockes Passion are characterized and developed.
Key words: Handel, Brockes, oratorio, paraphrases, oratorio Passion, Passion oratorio.
