«Acoustics» by L.G. Nemirovsky
as a Pedagogical Experience
at the People's Conservatory
of St. Petersburg-Petrograd |
Cherkasova Zoya
The article highlights the innovation of the music teacher Lev Grigoryevich Nemirovsky (1883–1942), which was expressed in the compilation
and reading, and later publication, of a course of lectures on acoustics for the academic audience of the People's Conservatory in St. PetersburgмPetrograd, which existed from 1908 to 1918. This pedagogical activity refl ects the historical progress that was made in Russian music education
before the revolutionary political events, and it is characterized by an author's approach, interdisciplinary research, and a desire to incorporate
relevant and contemporary scientific knowledge into the educational material. L.G. Nemirovsky's work, "Acoustics: Physical, Physiological, and
Musical. A Course of Lectures Delivered at the Petrograd People's Conservatory," aimed to comprehensively and fully explain to students both the
nature of sound and, consequently, the production of sound, as well as the nature of human auditory perception. In addition, the author reviewed and explained the introductory concepts of musical theory in the course: the concepts of the musical system itself, as well as the scale, scales,
tonalities, etc. The course also presents the history of the development of the musical system from the perspective of the evolution of the scale,
and includes characteristics of musical eras. Thus, the author made an attempt to comprehensively examine the phenomenon of music-making as
such, which undoubtedly provided students with a broad understanding of both musical creation and performance. This innovation refl ected the
active development of music education, which was driven by the overall development of the education system, which in turn followed the leading
social ideas, including universal literacy and accessible education.
It is noteworthy that the publication of L.G. Nemirovsky's course of lectures was carried out at the request of his students themselves, which
clearly indicated their intention to use this work for further performing and, possibly, pedagogical purposes, as well as its practical significance.
Since L.G. Nemirovsky's personality and his pedagogical work have rarely been mentioned in scientific research, this article will contribute to
the field of historical musicology and serve as a valuable addition to Russian music historiography.
