R. Kreutzer's Etudes as the Foundation
of a Violinist's Performing Mastery
(on the 260th Anniversary
of the Composer's Birth) |
Bulatova Anna
The relevance and scientific novelty of this study are determined by the need for an in-depth study of the fundamental principles of violin
performance related to repertoire. This article is timed to coincide with the 260th anniversary of the birth of the renowned French violinist and
composer Rodolphe Kreutzer. The author's goal is to evaluate his collection of études, created for students of the Paris Conservatory (he was
among its fi rst professors from its founding, along with P. Gavinié, P. Baillot, and P. Rode). Among Kreutzer's works, violin études occupy a
special place, having retained their significance in the pedagogical process: the research hypothesis is to substantiate this significance. A number
of performance editions by leading violinists of the 19th and 20th centuries are used as sources. The article also draws parallels between the
concepts of Kreutzer's cycle of 42 etudes and the «School of Violin Playing» («Méthode de violon»), which he compiled together with Rode and
Baillot to provide a theoretical foundation and systematic teaching at the Paris Conservatory.
Keywords: Rodolphe Kreutzer, violin school of the Paris Conservatory, violin etudes, Kreutzer's «42 Etudes or Caprices», the development
of violin technique, «Méthode de violon», editions of violin works, A.I. Yampolsky.
