Musicology Annotation << Back Russian Musical Avantgarde of the Early Twentieth Century. Essay Two Demchenko Alexander The second essay in this diptych of materials on the Russian musical avant-garde of the early 20th century continues the examination of the problems of innovation, primarily pioneered by Stravinsky and Prokofiev. The focus is on such phenomena as musical grotesque, neo-folklorism, genre spontaneity, the phenomenon of disharmony, the principle of extremity and antithesis, and the desire for universal liberation.
