A Musical Theoretical Analysis
of Lyadov's Piano Preludes: Issues of Style,
Imagery, and Performance |
Zhang Xin,
Hu Xinliang
A.K. Lyadov is considered the founder of the Russian piano prelude. His works represent the pinnacle of the chamber form of the genre.
The composer addressed preludes throughout his career, creating works with varying emotional tones: from tender lyricism (Op. 10, Op. 11) to
dynamic imagery (Op. 13, Nos. 1–3). The prelude cycle Op. 27 demonstrates Lyadov's mastery: in a compact form, he combines development
and coherence.
The characteristics of Lyadov's piano style include the primacy of melodic principles over harmony; polyphony and hidden polyphony;
restrained dynamics, light coloring; a predominance of fine technique, and the absence of massive chords; Recreating orchestral timbres on
the piano. Lyadov's preludes combine a folk foundation, lyrical expressiveness, and exquisite technique. They remain important works in the
repertoire of contemporary pianists, embodying the emotion and sincerity of Russian musical culture.
