Musicology Annotation << Back The Art of Playing the Trumpet in the USA: Questions of History, Performance, and Pedagogy. The Image of the Trumpet in the Artistic and Methodological Repertoire Manuilov Vladimir The aim of the work is to characterize the national solo repertoire for trumpet created in the last decade of the 19th – first half of the 20th century. The peculiarity of this historical stage was the predominance of orchestral and ensemble (as part of various pop and jazz groups) forms, in the context of which solo performance was formed. On the other hand, in the context of specific features of the formation of the national composing school, one can observe a reduced interest of academic composers in the trumpet. Finally, the third factor that determined the features of the original repertoire at this stage is the need for solo and methodological material, which was created by the trumpeters themselves. The article considers some compositions of this period: "The Quiet City" by A. Copland, "The Debutant" by G. Clarke, the fi rst part of Concerto No. 5 by E. Williams, artistic etudes. Based on the analysis, the following conclusions are made. The vast majority of works for trumpet realize the rich creative potential of the authors, who were outstanding trumpet virtuosos of their time. Thus, the works of G. Clark, aimed at creating a concert solo repertoire, reflect his brilliant virtuoso performing style, imply the use of rich nuances and timbre coloring, mastery of a variety of performing techniques. The works of E. Williams, created primarily for work with students, realize the set methodological goals, become the implementation of not only artistic, but also pedagogical ideas of the author. A small group of works created by composers does not create an independent direction in the development of the trumpet repertoire.
