Musicology Annotation << Back Violin Portrait of Ludwig Spohr Safonova Elena April 2024 marks the 240th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig Spohr (1784–1859), a musician who left a signifi cant legacy in all areas of his multifaceted activity: composer, conductor, solo violinist, teacher, and author of one of the major «Violinschule». He entered the history of performing arts as the head of the German violin school of the fi rst half of the 19th century, and the history of music as one of the founders of German romantic opera. At the same time, there are very few special studies dedicated to him in Russian. There are no monographs; valuable works by contemporaries, and even his own, have not been translated. This determines the relevance and scientifi c novelty of this publication. The purpose of the study is to create the most complete picture of Spohr the violinist. Particular attention is paid to the «Violinschule» («Violin School»), fragments of the text of which are given in the translation of the author of the article. It outlines the paths to the pedagogical concepts of Spohr's followers – the head of the German violin school of the second half of the 19th century J. Joachim and his student L. Auer. The hypothesis of the study is that Spohr's contradictory attitude to the bold innovations of the era (in particular, to the art of Paganini) is justifi ed by his desire to preserve the traditional values of aesthetics and culture of the past.
