Russian Folk Songs Transcribed
by N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov (from the History
of Life in Perm Government
at the Beginning of the 20th Century) |
Adishchev Vladimir
The characterization of N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov’s work on compiling books of the Russian folk songs and their transcription for different
choir lineups is given. It is shown that one of the regions of pre-revolutionary Russia where folk songs transcribed by Rimsky-Korsakov were
widely spread among general public was Perm government. Here, at the end of the XIX century and the beginning of the XX century, thanks
to the activities of the opera singer, choir conductor and teacher A.D. Gorodtsov a folk singing was greatly developed. About three thousand
people received music training during singing courses organized and taught by this musician. The courses graduates created about four hundred
musically literate (able to sing from score) adult and children’s choirs. Folk songs transcribed by Rimsky-Korsakov were always included in the
repertoire of these ensembles. These compositions were performed at numerous concerts organized by folk choirs for residents of villages and
industrial townships of Perm government.
