Musicology Annotation << Back Luis Humberto Salgado in Ecuadorian Music: the Ecuadorian School of Composition Diego Fernando Carrion Granda The article is devoted to the study of the life and work of Luis Humberto Salgado (1903–1977), one of the fi rst professional composers of Ecuador. The creative path and legacy of the musician are considered in line with the formation of the national school of composition of Ecuador. The features of the historical and cultural conditions that gave rise to the opening of the fi rst Ecuadorian musical educational institutions and the emergence of the fi rst professional musicians from among the indigenous population are presented. In the 1550s, the Colegio San Andres school was opened in Quito, where the sons of Inca military leaders studied. In the XVI–XVII centuries, a unique situation developed in the territory of present-day Ecuador (New Castile), associated with the interaction of the traditions of the indigenous Indian population (Incas and Quechua) and the cultural activities of Christian missionary monks involved in the processes of Spanish colonization and Christianization of Indians. The intensive creative activity of Ecuadorian musicians engaged in performance, composition, folklore gathering and research activities in the XVIII– XIX centuries became a rich soil on which the work of Luis Humberto Salgado grew up. Salgado became one of the fi rst Latin American composers whose works earned recognition from European and world audiences and critics. The author of the article sees his task in reviving interest in the music of his outstanding compatriot.
