Musicology Annotation << Back The Work of Erik Satie and French Dadaism of the Early 1920s Grachyova Veronika This article is devoted to the study of the peculiarities of French Dadaism and its infl uence on the work of Erik Satie. Based on the works of domestic and foreign researchers and the memoirs of his contemporaries, the author identifi es several key features of French Dadaism, including mockery and irony, the use of specifi c linguistic techniques, and the desire to embody the absurd. The paper considers the history of the emergence of the Dada movement in France. Instantenism, which is considered to be the «swan song» of Dadaism, became an important stage in the process of formation and internal transformation of this current. For the representatives of Instantenism, the most important thing was a momentary experience, a feeling. This attitude is characteristic of Erik Satie's Instantenist ballet Relâche, whose libretto was written by Francis Picabia. Despite the originality and unconventionality of the idea, no attempt has so far been made in the works of Russian musicologists to carry out an exhaustive semantic analysis of this ballet. This determines the relevance of the proposed research and its novelty. In the article the author also makes an attempt to comprehend Satie's work as a whole in the context of the ideas of French Dadaism of the early 1920s, analyses the ways of their expression and embodiment.
