Aristocratic Salon of A.F. Lvov. Music and Power
Ogarkova Natalia

The relevance of this study as well as its scientifi c novelty is underepinned by the author’s attempt to examine the characteristic features of St.
Petersburg’s salon music culture in the fi rst half of the 19th century using the example of A. F. Lvov’s salon. The article is centered around the fi gure
of Lvov: his career from the rank of captain to the Director of the Court Capella; his behavior tactics at the court of Nicholas I and communication
with the Imperial family; his status of a violin virtuoso and composer in the context of the life of the Imperial court and St. Petersburg aristocracy.
The aim of the study is to explore the specifi cis of Lvov's aristocratic salon as a trend-setter of musical taste and fashion where music played an
important cultural role along with other communication practices. Special attention is paid to the structure of the salon which was in line with the
characteristic features of the salon culture of the time and implied a specifi c time, space, forms of pastime and social composition of salon visitors.
The central event of a salon soiree was a concert that the host differentiated into "big" and "chamber", each with its own respective concert space,
rehearsal time, programs, repertoire, status and professional level of performers. The union of aristocracy and famous musicians, the synthesis
of "lighter" art (popular arias from Italian operas, paraphrases on opera themes by Thalberg, etc.) and "serious" art (long-form works by German
classics, quartet music) is a characteristic feature of the secular salon space.
Keywords: Alexei Lvov, Nicholas I, aristocratic salon, social space of the salon, salon concert
