Hunan Opera Huagusi in the Mirror of the Piano Creativity of Chinese Composers |
Liu Jie
The article is devoted to the problem of refraction of the traditions of Hunan opera Huagusi in the piano works of Chinese composers of the XX–XXI centuries. The genre of traditional opera was vividly refl ected in the miniatures of musicians of different generations – Wang Lisan («Geometric Ornament» from the cycle «Other Mountains»), Chu Wanghua («Liu Hai Cuts Firewood»), Tan Dun («Watching the Opera»). In their compositions, they rely on the main features of the regional musical theater of southeastern China: yu-mode with «neutral tones» (microalteration of the main tones of zhi, shang and jue pentatonic scale), imitating the melody of the local dialect; chuandiao tunes and the characteristic manner of their performance – with various types of vibrato and short runqiang vorschlags; expressive the timbres of the opera instrumental ensemble (Huagu datong, sona and a percussion group of gongs and drums).
Keywords: traditional opera of Hunan, Huagusi, contemporary Chinese piano music, «Geometric Ornament» by Wang Lisan, «Liu Hai Cuts Firewood» by Chu Wanghua, «Watching the Opera» by Tan Dun.
