Chapsh and Songs for the Treatment of Smallpox of the Circassians (Adyghes): Structure, Semantics, Dynamics of Cultural Meanings |

The article is devoted to magical ways of protecting a person and his world from smallpox. For the first time, on the material of the Adyghe ritual and musical traditions, an authentic model of the healing rite of chapsh is presented, the semantics and specific forms of its embodiment in folklore texts, songs for treating smallpox, actions, objects, etc. are described, and the “correct” ritual and everyday behavior of a person is considered. The article uses folklore and ethnographic sources of the 13th–20th centuries according to the Adygs, Abkhazians, Mozdok Kabardians, etc. Songs for the treatment of smallpox and songs of appeal to the lord of smallpox, which were endowed with apotropaic semantics, are considered.
