Musicology Annotation << Back Opera Performance in Chuvashia at the end of the 20th – Beginning of the 21st Centuries Mitina Maria G. The article is devoted to the problem of opera performance in Chuvashia in the context of the history of the Chuvash Musical Theater (now the Chuvash State Opera and Ballet Theatre), the birth of which was evidence of a big step forward in the development of the spiritual culture of the Chuvash people. The phenomenon of opera art as one of the richest and most multifaceted parts in the general system of musical genres is so vast and diverse that it occupies a leading place in the cultural and historical context of modern times. Having considered this component of the polysyllabic complex of national culture as one of the most distinctive and demonstrative (synthetic in nature, the opera genre is able to reflect the unique image of the people with their customs, traditions, and national character traits as clearly as possible), the author tries to determine the artistic landmarks that have become dominant in the laborious process of preparing favorable ground for the creation of a musical theater in the republic, as well as to identify ways for its further development. Being a cultural center since its inception, the theater today occupies a leading place in the development of the musical and theatrical art of the Volga region. Since 1991, the International Opera Festival named after the People's Artist of the USSR, the great Russian bass, soloist of the Bolshoi Theater, a native of Chuvashia M.D. Mikhailov, theater performances are frequent guests at international and all-Russian festivals in Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara, Vladikavkaz, Ulyanovsk, Yaroslavl, Syktyvkar, Ufa and other cities of the country. The range of issues raised in the work includes the general socio-cultural situation in the republic, the goals and objectives of the formation of a musical theater in Chuvashia, the training of professional performing personnel, and the first composer’s experiments in the field of the opera genre.
