Musicology Annotation << Back About voice leading in polyphonic music Ars nova Rumyantseva Margarita А. The article is devoted to the issue of voice leading in polyphonic works of the Ars nova era. The relevance of the article is determined by the fact that the study of Western European music of the Middle Ages is currently one of the serious directions in musicological science. Attention to historical themes, to a detailed study of ancient music allows musicologists and composers to penetrate deeper into the essence of the phenomena of the past and correlate them with modern tasks and aspirations. The purpose of the article is to show features of voice leading in the works of composers of the XIV century and its role in the general evolutionary process of the transition of music from the medieval stage of development to the upcoming Renaissance. The principles of voice leading are analyzed on the example of the musical creativity of F. de Vitri, G. de Machaut, F. Landini, as well as Italian authors of the first generation of Masters Piero, J. da Florence, J. da Bologna, whose names are less known, but deserve consideration in the context of their time. The main genre palette of these authors consists of such works as motets, ballads, rondo, le and virele. The analysis reveals the horizontal and vertical sides of voice leading, analyzes the nature of the vocal parts, the melodic connections between sound combinations. At the end of the work, the author’s observations are given, revealing the specifi cs of voice leading and its infl uence on the further development of musical art.
