Musicology Annotation << Back «They Didn’t Blow the Trumpet Early at Dawn»: the Origins of a Wedding Lyrical Song from the Repertoire of the P.G. Yarkov Choir near Moscow Bondarenko Maria V. The article is devoted to wedding lyrical songs that have become widespread almost throughout Russia, including in the Saratov Volga region. The work provides a musical and stylistic analysis of the wedding lyrical songs "Trumpets sounded early at dawn", which were performed when the bride’s braid was unwound during the hen party and in the morning of the wedding day. Lyrical songs marking the bride’s locus are presented as the core of the wedding ritual. The article considers a special song type, where the songs are united by one poetic plot, as it turns out, having an ancient origin. Songs about the unwinding of a girl’s braid in folklore are usually called "Trubushka" after the fi rst line of the refrain: "The trubushki sounded early at dawn". Often, this topic is closely linked to another plot with the initial line-the beginning "Not for long to hang a wreath on the wall". The starting point in the study of this type of songs was an archival audio recording made at the very beginning of the 40s of the last century, from a peasant choir near Moscow under the leadership of an original, unique collector and connoisseur of traditional Russian songs Pyotr Glebovich Yarkov. The purpose of the study is to systematize and compare the available materials of this song in publications of the XIX–XX centuries, as well as the author’s personal records recorded on the territory of the Saratov province.
