Musicology Annotation << Back Treatises by Taubert in St. Petersburg Shabalina Tatiana V. This article presents two treatises by Gottfried Taubert (1670–1746) that were discovered at the National Library of Russia. Both belong to the last period of his activity as a dancing master in Zerbst (1726/1727 to 1746). The fi rst source is a printed treatise entitled «Kurtzer Entwurff der Nutzbarkeit des künstlichen Tantz-EXERCITII <…> ». Despite the lack of a date on the title page, there is evidence of it having been written and published in 1727, at the very beginning of Taubert’s tenure in Zerbst which began shortly after he was given a privilege to teach dance there. The second treatise is the only surviving autograph by Taubert entitled «Kurtzer Entwurff von der Zuläßigkeit des sowol natürlichen als künstlichen Tantz-Exercitii <…>». Both sources shed new light on Taubert’s life and work in Zerbst and provide the first documentary evidence that he developed his dance theory further after the publication of the «Rechtschaffener Tantzmeister» (Leipzig, 1717). Moreover, both documents present hitherto-unknown sources for the dance history and contribute to our knowledge of the German cultural life of the Enlightenment era. The article uses materials presented at the International conferences in Leipzig (2017), Zerbst (2019) and St. Petersburg (2019). In comparison with the paper published in the Bulletin of Vaganova Ballet Academy (2018, № 6), the present article contains results of continuing study of the sources, improvements of their Russian translations as well as new facts and documents.
