Udmurt Tradition Of Orthodox Singing In The Vyatka Province: from The History Of Origin |

The most important part of the spiritual culture of the Udmurts is church singing in their native language. This component of the Orthodox musical world has not yet become the object of special research. The article is devoted to the history of liturgical singing practice of the Udmurt population of Vyatka province. The historical segment that came under the author's attention was the second half of the XIX – early XX century, the time of the origin of the tradition. It was then, when missionary and educational activities of the Russian Orthodox Church in the region were also oriented towards administering the newly baptized to the performance of church hymns. Based on the study of pre-revolutionary literature and archival sources, specific measures that contributed to the formation of this tradition are identifi ed; the role of music in the process of Christian education of the "Votsky" people is determined.
