Musicology Annotation << Back «Vision of John the Terrible» by S.M. Slonimskiy: intertextual aspects of the opera Lazanchina Anna V. Opera «Visions of John the Terrible» by S.M. Slonimskiy is considered in the article as one of the significant phenomena in the field of Russian musical theater of the late twentieth century. Analysis of the work is carried out from the standpoint of intertextuality. The opera was influenced by works of various types of art: music and literature, painting and sculpture, cinema and theater. The peculiarity of the dramaturgy of the opera is determined by its orientation towards the medieval literary genre of visions. The article focuses on the identification of musical intertextual relations of the opera with the works of M.P. Musorgsky, A.P. Borodin, N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov, D.D. Shostakovich. The infl uences of opera classics on a contemporary work can be traced at figuratively dramatic, structural, compositional and intonational levels. The staging of the opera on the stage of the Samara Academic Opera and Ballet Theater emphasized the versatility of the composition. The intertextual approach to the study of opera reveals the composer’s position on the problem of heritage. In this regard, S.M. Slonimsky is an undoubted successor of the best traditions of Russian opera classics, on the basis of which he managed to create his own author’s style. Keywords: S.M.
