Olea Croger in the History of Norwegian Folklore Collection of the 19th Century |
Ostapenko Anton G.
The paper is devoted to Olea Croger’s activity as the first collector of Norwegian folk music and poetry (1801–1855). Researchers are particularly interested in her “Collection of folk songs, instrumental tunes and tales of Telemark region” which was first published in full in the beginning of our century. The author undertakes an attempt which hasn’t been realized in national musicology before — to elaborate on her creative career as far as her developing interest to Norwegian folk music is concerned. The paper reveals the traits of Croger’s cooperation with M.B. Landstad and L.M. Lindeman, outstanding representatives of Norwegian national revival in the 19th century. The author focuses on comparing O. Croger’s and L.M. Lingeman’s legacy and some of their field work methods and identifies some specific features of aural notations of folk melodies Croger made with psalmodicon. The paper results from studying the newest materials on the subject matter which have been published in Norway in past decades and can, therefore, be of interest to historians of foreign music and folk music study.
