Musicology Annotation << Back Latin American popular music and the problem of cultural identity Dotsenko Vitaliy R. Latin American popular music has received in the modern era of world distribution. Numerous international festivals, competitions, performances of ensembles and individual performers have become an integral part of mass culture. In this regard, it became necessary to identify the nature of this multidimensional phenomenon, which is a constantly evolving Trinity of American, European and African elements. The technological revolution accompanying globalization has contributed to the emergence of hybrid genres emerging as a result of the penetration of elements of jazz and varieties of pop music into traditional patterns. Mass commercial production stimulated homogenization – stylistic depersonalization of musical production. This phenomenon has given rise to fears that local and regional cultural traditions will be suppressed due to the internationalization and a new uniform global culture will become predominant. At the same time, the reverse trend towards heterogeneity and self-affirmation of local cultures, motivated by the need to preserve ethnic differences, was also developed. The problem of the balance between homogenization and heterogenization can be considered pivotal in the evolution of modern popular music. In this context, we have undertaken an analysis of hybrid genres of Indian music in Mexico, Peru and the Caribbean-American salsa as examples of the evolution of cultural identity in a globalizing world.
