Methodological analysis of the distinguishing features of the structure and musical language of Vartan Adjemian’s sonatas for violin and piano |
Lavchyan Anahit V.
The article is dedicated to the distinguishing features of the structure and musical language in the sonatas for violin and piano of the notable Armenian composer Vartan Adjemian who synthesizes contemporary trends with national elements in his work. The article contains important aspects of the composer’s creative path, a brief overview of the history of the Armenian violin sonatas (key stages of the development of the genre, its characteristics) which having embraced the entire wealth of styles, forms and techniques crafted in the European music, chose its own way of development. The main part of the study covers a detailed methodological analysis of the Sonata-Poem which combines the single-movement nature and cyclicism of the sonata, as well as analysis of Sonata № 2 for violin and piano comprising three movements, in which the traditional sequence of tempo is changed: the scherzo finale is preceded by two slow movements. Organic combination of classical, modern and national elements, styles and trends (impressionism, dodecaphony and folk and spiritual music) render these pieces extraordinarily interesting both for the performers and the listeners.
Keywords: Vartan Adjemian, Movses Poghosyan, Inna Falik, Sonata-Poem, Sonata № 2 for violin and piano, Armenian violin sonata, theme-series, dodecaphony.
