Musicology Annotation << Back Composer and pedagogical activity of K.P. Galler: from the history of music of St. Petersburg Molchanova Tatiana S. There are many undeservedly forgotten figures in the history of musical Petersburg. One of them is Konstantin Petrovich Galler (1845–1888), music critic, composer and educator, a well-known supporter of huntin. He sought to realize himself in every field. But the small volume of the works of Galler, sharpness and a certain conservatism of his criticisms, and perhaps a favor from the higher authorities became the reason of its neglect in the Soviet times. In his critical works, he wrote about the pressing problems of the national school of composition, mainly welcomed the advanced musical phenomena. Galler’s compositions were performed in concerts of the Russian Musical Society. Some of them have survived and allow us to express a judgment about the good composer’s training. A significant contribution of Galler to musical pedagogy: in the years of teaching at the St. Petersburg Teaching Institute, he wrote "The textbook of choral singing" (1882), where, along with the generally accepted presentation of the material and teaching methods, they were offered a way to study intervals based on the melodies of folk songs. Galler’s interest in Russian folklore was expressed in his work primarily in «Collection of Folk Songs of the St. Petersburg Province, Luga Uyezd» (1889) – a unique, only until 1917 musical collection with folk songs of the Petersburg Province. K.P. Galler is a bright personality, and this work is intended to complement the pages of the history of musical Petersburg of the XIX century.
