Musicology Annotation << Back «The Resonance Effect» in the Ren&#233; Descartes' System of Harmony Marina N. Tchebourkina We offer a cycle of articles devoted to musical theory and to organ practice of French Baroque. The first article reveals the fact of substantiation in France of foundamental acoustic fenomenon — «the Resonance Effect». The Resonance fenomenon — or the overtone occurence — is demonstrated in 1618 by René Descartes, great French philosopher and scientist, but also the author of «Compendium on Music». This article concentrates its attention on analysis of Descartes’ propositions, who establish French proportion doctrine and classical intervals and chords theory.
