Musicology Annotation << Back Some Notes on Mensural Rhythm of the French Ars Nova: the Time Signature of Tempus and Its Implementation in Philippe de Vitry’s Motets Marina E. Girfanova The beginning of the French ars nova is marked by the appearance of measure tempus and its characteristic rhythm. The article traces the origin of tempus in the motets of Petrus de Cruce of the late 13th century. The author discloses the new concept of tempus in the early motets of Philippe de Vitry, for what involves the tractate of Vitry «Ars nova», including its description.
