Musicology Annotation << Back Spartan Decree Against Timotheus in the Boethius’ Fundamentals of Music Sergey N. Lebedev Spartan decree against Timotheus of Miletus in Boethius’ Fundamentals of Music is treated as an authentic document of Greek history. The text reconstruction allows for identification of the avant-garde feature of Timotheus’ performance as modulation by genus in a given formulaic melody from strophe to antistrophe. This modulation is considered a reason of extending number of strings on cithara of Timotheus, that is polychordia condemned by Spartans.
