Architectonic ideas of Beethoven's
Sonatas interpreted by Mikhail Lidsky |
Devutsky Vladislav
The large-scale ratios of sections in the works of great composers usually follow fairly precise patterns that fi nd adequate expression in
quantitative calculus. Beethoven's piano works is an interesting experience from this point of view. This is an interesting question whether the
composer's architectonic feeling is embodied in a specific performance interpretation. The article traces the reconstruction of the large-scale
ratios of sections of some Beethoven’s sonatas by the famous Russian pianist Mikhail Lidsky and shows that the performer not only preserves the
architectonic qualities of the music, but often improves them to a certain extent. Numerical calculations are performed either in bars (Beethoven's
musical text) or in seconds (Lidsky's audio recordings).
