The article is devoted to the problem of the embodiment of the poetry of Kosta Levanovich Khetagurov (1859–1906) in the music of Ossetian
and foreign composers. The article reveals the specifi cs of the artistic reception of poetry and the image of Kosta Khetagurov in operas, ballets,
symphonic and vocal, choral music of Ossetian composers. The criteria of the composer's understanding of K. Khetagurov's literary heritage and
appearance in the 1920s and 1930s turned out to be the ethical and social aspects of creativity. The view of the poet as a "people's defender", a
"singer of the native land" is illuminated through the prism of the peculiarities of the implementation of the poetic word in the works of the 1920s
and 1940s. The stylistic relationship of the vocal and choral opuses of T. Kokoity, E. Kolesnikov, B. Galaev, A. Kokoity, A. Alikov, A. Totiyev,
Z. Gagloev with samples of folk song creativity is noted. In the 1950s and 1970s, the Khetagurov myth was based on two mythologems: a poetfi ghter, a poet-hero, a poet-revolutionary and a romantic wanderer, a homeless, rejected poet-loner. In the composer's reception, the line of heroic
comprehension of the poet's image is embodied in the opera "Costa" by H. Pliev, in the cantata and oratorio opuses by D. Khakhanov, A. Acheev,
T.S. Khosroev, G. Gurzhibekov, the lyrical and romantic line is embodied in the symphonic works of L. Kuliyev, N. Karnitskaya, A. Kokoity and
choral works by B. Snetkov, Z. Khabalova. In the composer's reception in the last third of the XX – early XXI centuries, in particular in the works
of I. Gabaraev, L.Kanukova, L. Efi mtsova, Zh. Plieva, T.T. Khosroev and others, the perception of K.Khetagurov's poetic creativity as lyricalpsychological, tragic-romantic, historical-mythological comes to the fore.
