"Anthemes I" for Solo Violin by Pierre Boulez: Interpretation of the form and the "Virtual Theme" |
Petruseva Nadezhda
The article discusses the composition “Anthèmes 1” for solo violin by Pierre Boulez (1991). Analysis of the play is presented in two aspects:
on the one hand, Boulez’s return to the thematic type of writing (“virtual” theme, its fi gures, sectional form) is shown in the context of Schoenberg’s
“hyperthematism” and Webern’s “infrathematism” as historical trends; on the other hand, serial operations have been demonstrated that outline
the problem of the genesis of the product (original series, hidden symmetry, serial region, “constellation,” cyclic interpolation). To do this, it was
necessary to consider “Anthèmes 1” in the context of literary essays and musical compositions by Pierre Boulez. The conclusions show that all
perceptual, intuitive-communicative concepts (“envelopes,” “satellites,” “auras,” “signals,” “satellites,” “memorization,” “improvement,” “directivity,”
etc.) are borrowed by Boulez from two areas that are offi cial objects of study in IRCAM: on the one hand, from the fi eld of acoustics, studying
the properties of sound, on the other, from psychoacoustics, or studying how music and sound are perceived and reconstructed by the mind. It
is emphasized that the main function of the series as an ideal object of serial thinking (its positions and prospects are outlined by Boulez in the
treatise “Think Music Today”) is the production of new sound objects. The dialectic of Boulez’s analytical method is revealed, which manifests
itself in a combination of two approaches to musical composition: aesthetic (caused by problems of music perception) and compositional-technical
(work with a theme-series and with a “virtual theme”); in an effort to combine logic and accurate calculation (when “the problem of communication
solves everything!”) With the freedom of the creative process. The difference between the ways of existence of musical composition involves the
use of a complex approach as a combination of musical phenomenology (the focus of consciousness on local structures), hermeneutics (the art
of understanding and interpretation) and elements of comparativism.
