Azerbaijani Instrumental Mugham: Structure, Main Varieties |
Gurbanova Lili K.
The focus of this article is an analysis of the main varieties of Azerbaijani instrumental mugham: Rast, Shur, Seygah, Shushter, Bayati-Shiraz, Chahargah and Humayun. Their structural peculiarities and thematic properties are determined by peculiarities of organization of dastgakh, the main form of Azerbaijani mugham. It is a multi-part cyclical work that includes samples of various mughamat genres (mugham, reng, tesnif, dibache, deramed, zerbi-mugha and shikaste). Some of them may form the basis for separate, independent musical compositions. This paper presents the characteristics of those sections (shobe), which are obligatory for both dastgahs and instrumental mughams: Berdasht, Maye and Ayag.
In each of the considered mughams the musical structure is analyzed, the translation of the names of the main sections is offered, and their role within the general whole is evaluated. Some types of mughams have quite a clear structure, which does not change much in different performing versions. However, in others there is a great degree of variability. Such compositions are given special attention in the article.
