Musicology Annotation << Back The Anthem of F. Nicolai’s «Wie Schon Leuchtet der Morgenstern» and its Interpretation in the Chorale Treatment by I.G. Buttstett Rumyantseva Margarita А. The article is devoted to the Protestant hymn "Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern" ("How beautifully the morning star shines"), composed by the Lutheran pastor, poet and composer of the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, Philip Nicolai, and its refraction in the organ choral adaptation of the German organist and composer of the Baroque era I.G. Buttstett. The purpose of the article is to trace the relationship between the content of the hymn and instrumental processing. The article briefl y presents the general characteristics of the chorale genre and the history of the emergence of this anthem by F. Nicolai, dedicated to the memory of his young student Wilhelm Ernst von Waldeck. The work contains the full poetic text of the chorale in two languages, in the original German and in Russian translation, made by the modern pastor A.V. Tikhomirov. A notated version of the chorale melody is also given. A detailed analytical aspect was given to the three-voice choral arrangement for organ by I.G. Buttstett. The polyphonic structure of the composition, the two-layer texture, and the methods of developing melodic material are noted. As a result of a comprehensive analysis, the principles of the structure of the choral processing, the typical features of the melody characteristic of many Protestant chorales, and individual features that allow revealing the musical and poetic image were revealed.
