Synthesis of Chinese and French Traditions in the Concert «Extase II» by Composer Chen Qigang |
Li Yaping
The article is devoted to the synthesis of Chinese and French traditions in the concerto for oboe and chamber ensemble «Extase II» (1997) by contemporary composer Chen Qigang (1951). The musician refers to Chinese culture at different levels: modal (pentatonic), melodic (citation of a folklore mountain song and variant principles of its development, ornamentation), metro-rhythmic (free meter yaoban of the Peking opera), textural (elements of heterophony), timbre (imitation of playing music on sonа), combining national musical «codes» with the characteristic features of French music. French features are realized in colorful multi-tertian consonances - diatonic scales, whole-tone verticals and horizontals, characteristic of C. Debussy, a complex metrical organization, formed as a result of additional durations, reminiscent of the style of Chen Qigang’s teacher – O. Messiaen.
Keywords: Chen Qigang, Chinese-French composer, Extase II, mountain song «Village of Thirty Miles», contemporary Chinese instrumental music.
