Interpretation of Mimi’s Image by Female Singers in the Second Half of the 20th and the Beginning of the 21st Centuries |

Interpretation of the image is one of the most pressing problems of the modern opera. A wellthought-out performance interpretation, which is the product of the joint work of the director, the conductor and the singer himself, is able to open new facets of the image known to everyone, actualize it in modern realities, give the listener the opportunity to read the unfading meanings embedded by the composer. This article examines various interpretations of the image of Mimi from the opera La Boheme by Giacomo Puccini in the works of such outstanding singers as Montserrat Caballe, Sonya Yoncheva, Mirella Freni, Angela Georgiou. Along with the accentuation by the named performers of the traits implied by Puccini himself, they, at the same time, were able to find their own nuances in the image of Mimi. The author pedals the idea of the conditionality of the performance interpretation by the will of the director and conductor, on which the general vision of the image and the means of its musical embodiment depend.
