The Combination of National Melodies and European Music in Piano Art in the Formative Years of the New China |
Guo Zhiyu
The formation of piano music in China in the second half of the XX century was not easy. After the active development of this musical direction in the first half of the century, in the first years of the founding of New China, it showed a tendency to rapid growth. According to unofficial data for 17 years since the founding of the People's Republic of China, there have been more than 360 different piano works in the country. However, the Cultural Revolution that began in China in 1966 made its own adjustments and doomed Chinese piano music to ten years of stagnation. The end of the revolution marked a new stage in the formation of piano art, which was characterized by the use of the «Chinese style» in combination with Western musical techniques. This direction laid the foundation for the development of the Chinese piano school in the new century.
