Starry Sky and Moral Law: Artistic Codes of the Concept by I. Kant in Music by V.A. Belyaev |
Sambrish Elena Iu.
The article examines the manifestation of conceptualism in contemporary music. The concept is interpreted as the artistic and semantic code of the composition, which has a cultural and philosophical projection. It is presented not as a rigid scheme, but as a flexible model, or a mythologeme that allows for a multifaceted interpretation. Cosmogonic ideas that have a long history in music are interpreted as such a concept. In this case, they are represented by I. Kant’s idea of the relationship between space and man, establishing the equality of moral laws and the laws of the universe. The implementation of this idea is considered on the example of three instrumental compositions from 2012–2019 by contemporary composer of the Republic of Moldova Vladimir Belyaev. In one of them, the author quotes I. Kant in the title: «... Und der Schternenhimmel über uns ...» («... And the starry sky above us ...»), for a symphony orchestra. The other two embody this idea in a veiled way – «Passion-XXI» for symphony orchestra with organ and «Concert pentru un compositor» («Concert for a Composer») for an ensemble of instruments. As a result, different artistic solutions are formed: the first work personifies the anthem of the universe and man, in the second the idea of harmony between man and the cosmos appears to be difficult to achieve, but passionately desired, in the third it is shown in a delicate balance. «Passion-XXI» synthesizes many ideas, embodying the concept of a double world, the concept of a way. It is filled with complex semantics, contains quotes by I.S. Bach, musical rhetorical figures, the symbol of the cross, SOS leitmotif. Genre hybrid combines the features of a symphony, concert, passion. «Concert for a Composer» is a chamber concert that refracts the concept of the unity of the macro- and microworld. The embodiment of the figure of the composer in three forms is unique - as a biographical author, an author-creator and an artistic one. «... And the starry sky above us ...» is a symphonic poem summing up the philosophical quest. Although the works are different by many criteria, they form a kind of macrocycle, united by a common idea, since they refract a single artistic and poetic code about the inextricable connection between man and the cosmos.
