Musicology Annotation << Back About Two Compositions for Guitar by Maurice Ohana: "Tiento" and the Cycle "If the Day Comes..." Petruseva Nadezhda A., Glebova Elena S. The relevance of the research and its scientific novelty are determined by the desire to analyze to analyze and put in a wide context two compositions for guitar by Maurice Ohana (1913–1992). The article examines Ohana’s aesthetic attitude, the creation of the Zodiac group, the trajectory of Ohana's musical development from the discourse of primitivism to universalism. The article compares the early piece "Tiento" for six-string guitar (1957) as an instrument of the "distant past", which symbolizes the power of Andalusian culture (the interpretation of genre, form, meter and modal technique is shown), and the cycle ("Si le jour paraît… " ("If the day comes ...", 1962-1964), intended for the ten-string guitar co-invented by Oana and Yepes. Since the composer views the guitar as a kind of bridge between tradition and innovation, it was necessary to show the interpretation of the cycle, the peculiarities of the syntax and forms of the parts, the sound resources of the innovative guitar, and archetypes-symbols. An integrated approach is used as a combination of elements of musical phenomenology (orientation of consciousness to structures) and hermeneutics (the art of understanding). This article focuses on the process of understanding and interpreting Ohana’s poetic imagination, and how the guitar plays such an important role in all of his work. The conclusions emphasize that Maurice Ohana’s concept of universalism in guitar music is based on a double movement towards innovation and being rooted in an atavistic and ancient memory from which he draws his original energy.
