Musicology Annotation << Back Boris Tishchenko: Tribute to Schubert Serov Yuri E. The article examines the Eighth Symphony of the outstanding Russian composer of the second half of the twentieth century B.I. Tishchenko (1939–2010). He is the author of seventeen complex in language, innovative and modern symphonic works. The main thing in Tishchenko’s symphony is the desire to reveal, to expose the deep conflicts and contradictions of the life around him, spiritual purifi cation, intense work of thought, reliance on beauty, craving for harmony, but also the fight against evil in its most bizarre manifestations. In the works of Tishchenko, there is always the significance of thought, the individuality of the solution to an artistic problem. The Eighth Symphony was created at the end of the composer’s life; it became his last major orchestral work completed. The symphony is laconic in size, modest in orchestra musicians number, stylistically very different from everything created by Tishchenko and filled with allusions to the music of F. Schubert, first of all, to the Unfinished symphony of the Viennese master. Schubert was one of Tishchenko’s most beloved composers and in his last symphony he pays him a full-fledged tribute of love and respect. This article is the first attempt in Russian musicology to investigate B. Tishchenko’s Eighth Symphony. The article is a continuation of the author’s previous material related to the symphonies of B. Tishchenko, and explores the composer’s work from a new perspective – the refraction of the traditions of Western European music.
